Barrier Packaging Technology

Barrier layers control the transmission of oxygen, moisture, aroma and light through a package. Choosing the right barrier technology is the single most important decision for extending the shelf life of sensitive food products.

1.1EVOH Barrier

What is it? EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) is a high-performance oxygen barrier resin with one of the lowest oxygen transmission rates (OTR) among flexible packaging materials. In multilayer films it is sandwiched between nylon or PET layers to protect it from moisture.

Key advantages: Extremely low OTR; transparent — product visibility is retained; excellent for oxygen-sensitive foods; recyclable-compatible structures available.

Typical applications: Vacuum bags, thermoforming films, meat and cheese packaging, ready meals, products needing 12+ months of shelf life.

1.2PVDC Barrier

What is it? PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) is a coating or film layer with outstanding combined oxygen and moisture barrier, and excellent chemical resistance.

Key advantages: Combined O2 and H2O barrier in one layer; very high shrinkage for tight skin packaging; good sealing performance.

Typical applications: PVDC shrink bags for meat and poultry, barrier bags, cheese and tuna packaging.

1.3Aluminum Foil Barrier

What is it? Aluminum foil (AL) is a light-, oxygen- and moisture-proof metallic layer typically laminated as PET/AL/PE or similar structures.

Key advantages: Near-zero gas and light transmission; maximum shelf life; withstands high retort temperatures; premium brand appearance.

Typical applications: Retort pouches, coffee packaging, spice and pharmaceutical packaging, products requiring 18–24 months of shelf life.

2.1PA/PE Structures

What is it? A two-layer (or co-extruded) structure combining polyamide (nylon, PA) for strength and polyethylene (PE) as the heat-seal layer.

2.2PET/PE Structures

2.4CPP Structures

What is EVOH barrier packaging and when should it be used?

EVOH barrier packaging uses an ethylene-vinyl alcohol layer to block oxygen. It is the best choice for oxygen-sensitive foods such as meat, cheese and ready meals that need a transparent package with extended shelf life.

What is the difference between PVDC and EVOH barrier films?

EVOH offers the lowest oxygen transmission rate but loses barrier performance in high humidity. PVDC provides a combined oxygen and moisture barrier in one layer with high shrinkage. PVDC suits shrink bags; EVOH suits thermoforming and co-extruded vacuum films. Packtastic supplies both structures.

Which film structure is best for vacuum packaging — PA/PE or PET/PE?

PA/PE is the standard choice for vacuum bags because nylon provides puncture resistance and toughness. PET/PE is preferred when print quality and dimensional stability matter more, for example in custom printed retail pouches.

What is the difference between gravure printing and digital printing?

Gravure uses engraved cylinders and is most economical for large volumes with the highest color consistency. Digital printing has no plate fees, supports low MOQs and fast design changes — ideal for small brands and test runs.

What temperature can retort pouches withstand?

Retort pouches are designed to withstand high-temperature sterilization at 121–135°C (250–275°F). PET/AL/PE foil structures are the most common choice for retort applications.

What is thermoforming packaging?

Thermoforming heats a bottom film, forms cavities, places the product inside, and seals a top film — often under vacuum — creating a tight, protective package such as vacuum skin packaging for meat and cheese.

What is form-fill-seal (FFS) packaging?

Form-fill-seal is a fully automated process that forms, fills and seals pouches from rollstock film in one line, delivering high speed and low unit cost for high-volume products.
